Dangerous Liaisons: Barbie and Louboutin
Christian Louboutin "directs" burlesque Barbie a la Moulin Rouge
Oh that Christian Louboutin. It's not enough that he continues to make us weak in the knees by eternally tapping our inner Cinderella. His latest consorting with the most sought-after female icon of the last 50 years is a match made of heart and soul.

Over those five decades, Barbie has apparently racked up 1 billion pairs of shoes. (While that factoid begs to be hyperbole, it's probably true.) But what she has lacked is the ultimate heels: Those ruby-soled Louboutins. As part of Mattel's 50th anniversary campaign surrounding their star, Louboutin has been engaged in a year-long program that comprises of three special dolls--packaged in Louboutin shoe boxes, each with four-pair of Barbie-size shoes (the $150 editions will be sold via BarbieCollector.com and at Net-a-porter.com); a collection of 12 pairs of Louboutin Barbie shoes ($40--or 1/5 of a pair of human-size pumps!); and a diary filled with (cheeky) photographs of her adventures with her favorite prince of slippers.

It's a testament to Louboutin's allure that he persuaded the suits at Mattel--many who happen to be women--to showcase Barbie as a jewel theif and burlesque dancer, and even in a chic bob having cocktails with a friend who is definitely not Ken. As for the worlds-end-level scandal that erupted earlier this week when the designer said Barbie's ankles were too fat, he quickly clarified with a response via WWD: “Barbie’s foot has always been shaped less ‘curvy’ than the rest of her perfect body,” he said. “I just added my little science to Barbie and I’ve been proud to serve her. But fat ankles she didn’t have, she just could have had thinner ankles. That’s all."

Of course, the most dangerous aspect of this liaison between doll and designer? The delicious trouble it's going to put me in. I never played with Barbies. But this will definitely be the exception.
