Breaking News: Supermodel Naomi Campbell has been charged with three counts of assaulting a police officer over an alleged air rage incident last month at Heathrow Airport.
Why? Her bags went missing. Of course, so did those of thousands of other passengers, famous and not, that week, when the new Terminal 5 at Heathrow opened. I know. My in-laws were without luggage for more than a week. Instead of going ballistic, we went shopping.
Campbell is charged with one offense of disorderly conduct likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress and two offenses of using threatening, abusive words or behavior to cabin crew.
Each allegation carries a max six months in jail.
It was only yesterday that the newly turned 38-year-old catwalk vet made a bit of good news as the subject of photographer Nick Night’s new series in which he will create 30-foot sculptures in glass fiber or alabaster of the model.
Naomi Campbell as giant? Giant pain in the ass to any lowly peon around her. Though she continues to be stunningly beautiful at times, her bratty behavior is not. I only have to recall the Murakami gala at MOCA in L.A., when she verbally attacked a stylist pal over legal use of a photograph (in which she actually looked gorgeous), and not a wink later, was physically elbowing Andy out of the way as she lunged for her 15th Murakami tablemat. She also tried to shove in front of him to have the artist sign her mats first. Instead, Andy, a fellow Brit, gave her a few choice words.
Darling, even Dorian Gray got his in the end.
Of course, Campbell’s history of attacking assistants and others has become such a part of the tabloid culture that even she allowed a bit of mocking during the recent season finale of “Ugly Betty.” She lifted her phone, and the entire cast ducked for cover should she decide to hurl it.
Not that it was any joke in January 2007 when she pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault for doing just that at her maid—in a dispute over missing a pair of jeans. New York courts ordered her to do community service and attend a two-day anger-management program.
In 2000, she pleaded guilty to beating an assistant while making a film in Canada two years before. Under an agreement with Toronto prosecutors, Campbell was released without punishment or a criminal record.
Campbell is due to appear in court on June 20.
