Among the battle gear and daily wares filling Tullie House, our museum excursion during our Cumbria visit (hello Pauline and Pops!), were these uber heavy metal accessories. The wee wristlet outweighs even the weightiest of Chloe bags. And footwear was studded, not unlike golf cleats.
The
Tullie House is a shrine to the OGs who pioneered this chilly chunk along the border of Scotland. Names such Irvine, Nixon, Young, Scott and Ridley come from a people known from about the end of the 13th century to the 16th century as Reivers--or raiders. And they still relish their history as bandits. ("Bereaved," by the way, derives from "be-reived," or to lose a loved one by death or kidnap from ransom to the Reivers. Nice). No surprise, then, that their lifestyle influenced such a wide swath of weaponry, house tools and personal accoutrements all forged in bronze and then the harder-wearing iron.
